what decodes your HD audio signal

I want to know, if your Blu- ray has onboard HD DTS decoding and your amp does HD audio,which one decode your sound. Will it be right in saying if your amp is only HDMI passthrough,  and your bluray player does HD decoding, you still get DTS-HD. This via HDMI cable. I know it can do it if you use the pre- outs of BD player to the ins of amp. I want to know does it do it via the HD cable.
